BEACH HANDBALL - AN EXCITING NEW SPORT WITH OLYMPIC ASPIRATIONS

Standard handball - like most team games - has evolved over the years, thus moving from indoor fields to outdoor ones. The main purpose of this solution was not only to make the games more attractive, but also to gain new fans. This is how beach handball emerged, which is played on specially created sand pitches or - as the name suggests - on beaches. This is how beach handball became very popular around the world in a very short time. Also in Poland there is no shortage of beach handball fans. After all, this is where the sport will make its debut at the 2023 European Olympics. This is a great honour that the European Handball Federation has entrusted to us. The history of beach handball has its beginnings in sunny Italy. It was there that Gianfranco Briani - a member of the Italian Olympic Committee - came up with the idea of playing handball on the beach. This project was intended as a tool to promote traditional games. It quickly became apparent that beach handball could become a whole new sport.

The rules of beach handball are very similar to those of its traditional form. However, a sand pitch is needed, equipped with beach handball goals. Both male, female and mixed teams can have 3 players and a goalkeeper. The whole game is played by playing the rubber ball 2 halves of 10 minutes each. Points are scored through accurate shots to the goal. During the game it must be remembered that the ball cannot touch the ground and a winner must be determined after each half.

Beach handball continues to grow and is of great interest to athletes and its supporters. Beach handball's aspiration - like almost every sport - was to appear at the Olympic Games. For the first time, beach handball as an Olympic discipline made its debut at the 2018 YOG Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. This was a very good start that has guaranteed beach handball's climb to the top. In subsequent years, it also appeared at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

In light of the great success of beach handball at the end of 2020, the Ministry of Sport has provided great news regarding the European Olympic Games in Poland. Beach handball will appear as a discipline at the European Olympic Games in Krakow (planned for 2023), which will take place from 21st June to 2nd July.

The European Olympic Games Kraków-Malopolska is yet another - after the World Games Wrocław 2017 - such an important event with beach handball in the program, hosted by Poland.
