Volleyball, basketball, running – and on and on. If this is what physical education classes look like at school, it is the easiest way to make students discouraged and bored with the curriculum. If you want to encourage children to be physically active, think about a floorball set. It’s a sport that will thrill students to compete and make them like physical education lessons.
FLOORBALL – THE RULES OF THE GAME AND THE SPECIFICS OF THE SPORT
Unlike traditional hockey, floorball is not played on ice. Nevertheless, it is also a dynamic and exciting sport. The advantage of floorball is that it can be played in any gym. It is also not a violent sport like traditional ice hockey.
A floorball team consists of six players, including one goalkeeper. However, occasionally teams are smaller during school games. During the game:
• players use sticks and try to put the ball in the opponent’s goal;
• the coach of the team may decide to take the goalkeeper off the field and replace them with one player who will play in the field;
• only the stick can be used to control the ball – the exception is when the ball is received on the chest. Then it can be played once with the foot;
• players may not, in order to receive the ball, hit the opponent’s stick with the stick or put it between the opponent’s legs. It is also forbidden to block or push players from the opposing team. Only shoulder to shoulder contact is permitted;
• aggressive play and attacks on the opponent may result in a penalty. This is normally a 2-5 minute time-out. If a player commits a particularly aggressive foul, he may receive a match penalty.
In the professional game, floorball matches last 60 minutes and are divided into periods of 20 minutes each. There is a 10-minute break after the end of each period. School games can, of course, be shorter – especially as this sport requires excellent fitness and good physical preparation. Also, the pitch for the game can be smaller than the prescribed 40x20m. This will increase the dynamics of the passes between the young hockey players.
FLOORBALL FOR CHILDREN – WHY IS IT WORTH IT?
A floorball set at school will not only help to add variety to physical education classes. It is a sport that:
• teaches teamwork – in order for the team to score points, the players need to pass the ball to other players, not rush to the goal themselves;
• has a great impact on children and teenagers’ fitness – it is a dynamic and fast game requiring players to cover several kilometres on the pitch;
• helps improve reflexes, reaction speed and also accuracy of movement – in order to drive the ball with the stick, you cannot hit it too hard or too soft.
A FLOORBALL COURT AT SCHOOL – HOW TO ORGANISE IT?
It can be quickly set up in any gymnasium. Even if it is smaller in size, it will still be a lot of fun for the pupils to play - just have teams of, say, four players each instead of six.
Floorball stick
It needs to be shorter than the one for adult players. In primary schools, for example, the Cobra junior 85 cm floorball stick will work well – it will be ideal for players who are no more than 165 cm tall.
It is a stick made of robust but very lightweight plastic. Its striking part is in the form of a grating. This makes it easier to hit powerful and dynamic shots and to give momentum to the ball. This model has been designed to sit securely in the hands of school-age children. The design allows it to be held comfortably with both hands.
School floorball ball
White floorball balls are most commonly used in schools. These have 26 holes (just like the adult models), so they roll faster on the pitch when hit. For example, in the gymnasium, a school floorball ball made of polypropylene will work well.
Floorball balls are small – according to the rules of the game, their diameter is 72 mm. This is why children play with the same models as adults.
Floorball goals for children
A gymnasium does not need to have a full-size goal that is 160 cm wide and 115 cm high. During physical education lessons, the much smaller models perform well. This could be, for example, a 90x60 cm floorball goal.
It is lightweight and can be folded. These dimensions make it both easy to move from place to place and to store. It is a sturdy design made of steel tubing.
Physical education can be an attractive and popular subject for pupils. All you need to do is to spice up its programme. The children’s floorball set is a good way of doing this, as it allows them to pick up the sporting bug of competition. Consisting of just a ball, sticks and two goals, it is an inexpensive piece of equipment for which a room can be found in any gymnasium.
